RIDE NAKED FOR THAT TOTAL TAN

by Tom Green

Now that I have your attention. Keep your shirt on, and your boots, your jacket, your gloves, and your helmet. If you have ever taken the experienced riders course you would realize that they want you to ride all the time in full gear. This is not because their children have a lemonade stand around the corner and are hoping for sales high enough so they can go to college. The reason is for your own personal protection. Let’s break down what is meant by full gear.

HELMET......This is the most important piece of protective gear that you can wear.  It not only protects against head injury, it also protect against the wind, cold, extreme heat, and any flying objects.

FACE SHIELD......I know it is not cool to ride your Harley and be wearing a face shield, heck you don’t see me riding with one very often. I will be riding with a tinted one when my wife and I go to Sturgis. That is a long way to go with the sun beating on my baby like face. It also protect you from flying insects and stones or sand.

GLOVES......hey these look kinda cool and will improve your grip and also protect your hands.

JACKET (VEST) & PANTS........Long sleeve shirts and long pants provide the most protection against sunburn, windburn, dehydration, hypothermia, and abrasions. Light colored or reflective colors help increase visibility.

BOOTS........They will provide protection to your feet and ankles while giving you good grip on your foot pegs and the road.

I hope I haven’t missed anything but if I have please let me know.

Oh yeah, did you know the term flip flop is what sandals, toes, and feet do when they make contact with the road, foot pegs, brake pedal, shift pedal, or wind blasts. I think I will stay with my boots.
